Cooking beans from dried is not only a big money saver, it’s also a space saver compared with storing a tower of cans in your cupboard.

Dried beans are typically 2-3 times smaller than their cooked versions and of course, there is no water weight, so a bag of dried beans will be the equivalent to many cans.

Once you get in the habit of a little forward planning and soaking for a few hours prior to cooking, it’s incredibly easy and not at all labour intensive to cook your own beans from dried. You can also cook up a big batch and portion them up pre-cooked in the freezer for future speedy meals.

Each type of bean has a different cooking time – this partly depends on how long they have been soaked and also on the size of the bean – typically the smaller the bean the shorter the cooking time. It could be anywhere from 30-90 minutes simmering on the stove (or a lot faster in a pressure cooker).

There are various guides to timings online but we suggest checking after 30 minutes of simmering and then keep testing every few minutes until cooked. If you make a note of the time you’ll know what to allow for next time.

Now you’re confident with cooking your dried beans… what will you make?

Here are some ideas to get you started…

  • Mung Beans make a great curry (try adding spices, coconut milk powder, and green veggies), a lovely warming stew or a dahl.
  • Red Kidney Beans are the perfect veggie chilli addition (great alongside black beans and finely chopped mushrooms too), or in curries or beans burgers.
  • Pinto Beans are the foundation for Mexican Pinto Beans, a smoky dish often serves with tacos or fajita wraps, they are also great in soups and stews.

It will keep in an airtight container for up to four days in the fridge so you can serve it multiple ways on multiple days.
