An easy fruit crumble with no added sugar. The banana is optional but makes a great addition to make for a super thick and juicy fruit layer.
We’ve used gluten free oats instead of flour as in a traditional crumble topping.
This is a wonderful Autumn dessert to use fruits in season… apples, pears and blackberries fresh picked from the hedgerows are delicious!
This is a small crumble to a serve two, but easily doubled for a larger dish.
- 1 chopped large apple- thinly sliced or cubed (no need to peel)
- 1 chopped large pear or two handfuls of blackberries
- Juice of half a lemon
- 1 small banana- mashed well
- 1 cup oats
- ¼ cup chia seeds (ground almond also works well)
- 2 tbs coconut oil– melted
- 2 tbs syrup of choice
- 1 tsp vanilla or cinnamon
Prepare the apple and pear/blackberries and toss in the lemon juice. Add the mashed banana to evenly distribute (this is optional but makes a thicker ‘juicy’ mixture).
Spoon the fruit mixture into the bottom of a smallish pie dish to serve two. Prepare the topping ingredients in a separate bowl. Mix together until all the dry ingredients are fully coated with oil and syrup. Press the topping over the fruit in the dish and press firmly. Bake at 180C for approximately 20 minutes.
Serve hot (also delicious cold) with yoghurt, custard or ice-cream.
