Canihua is a grain-like seed that’s closely related to Quinoa but even better in our opinion. It is naturally gluten-free, a great source of vegetable protein (15g per 100g) and high in fibre (11g per 100g!). It is also found to be a source of calcium, zinc and iron.
Canihua is native to the Andes Region in South America and our Canuihua is grown in Peru. Just like Quinoa, Canihua has a wonderful nutty flavour but it’s slightly sweeter. Excellent to use as an alternative in recipes that call for rice or couscous, so if you’ve never cooked with Canihua before it’s very easy to bring it into your diet.
Unlike Quinoa, there is no need to rinse Canihua as it does not contain saponins – the naturally occurring protective coating found in most plants that gives a slightly bitter flavour unless washed thoroughly. Another reason we love it!
Once *cooked add to salads, serve it with stews and chillis or add it to soups and allow it to cook in the liquid from the soup
*Cook it the same way you would cook rice. Boil the Canihua in a pot with water over the stove top.
