Allspice originates from the ground berries of Pimento dioica, which is a small tree native to the West Indies. Allspice is not actually a blend of different spices like the name might suggest. Instead, the name highlights the diversity of the aroma and taste of the spice, which evokes a mixture of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger. It also has an underlying peppery tone, which is how the Spanish came to name the tree in which the berries originate from – ‘Pimiento’ or pepper. Another clue in the name is that allspice is a great spice for adding to all things! It’s commonly found in the Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Latin American cuisines and also adds a delicious kick to sweet dishes.  It is also thought to have a number of health benefits as it is a good source of potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium and Vitamin C.

Suggested use:

Allspice is a great addition to sweet dishes such as gingerbread, cookies, baked apple desserts and hot spiced cider. 

It is also an essential ingredient for Jamaican Jerk seasoning and it can be used in stews, curries, marinades or added to vegetables prior to roasting.
